When an animal welfare activist drew our attention to Fleur, the animal was at the livestock dealer. Fleur was only two years old at the time and suffered from summer eczema. This disease is not easy for a horse to cope with and it means a lot of work for the owner. Obviously Fleur's owner had not forgiven her for this blemish and it was probably for this reason that she ended up in the horse trade. The horse dealer was surprised at the time that we wanted this particular horse and said: "I call a horse like this a 'lefty'. You'd be better off with a 'right-handed' one that's healthy and problem-free." He had no idea at the time that it was the losers and the "lefties" who needed us the most and whom we wanted to help with all our hearts.
