Exactly what every farmer fears happened to the owner of Hilde and her companions: The cattle shed went up in flames and almost every animal inside fell victim to the fire. 125 dairy cows died in agony in the flames and only seven were able to escape from the building. Hilde was lucky, but the farmer faced ruin. A neighboring farmer was able to provide temporary shelter for the injured animals. When we heard about this, we offered the farmer our help and bought the seven surviving cattle.
