Wheelchair dog New Mark

A fate to ponder

A few days ago, we moved New Mark, a dog from Romania, into a cosy room in Henndorf. Nobody can resist his faithful eyes and everyone is horrified by the story that the four-year-old dog has brought with him. He lived with a family in the neighbouring village of the Aiderbichler animal shelter in Romania until one day a car rolled over New Mark’s hind legs.

The owners brought New Mark back into the garden, but his injuries were obviously ignored. The fact that New Mark could no longer move his hind legs didn’t seem to interest anyone except the neighbours. The dog owners looked away, but neighbours looked and saved New Mark’s life. What pain must New Mark have been in? How alone must he have felt? How loudly must he have whimpered until the neighbours discovered his dire state of health and took the initiative?

Devastating diagnosis

His hind legs were open and badly inflamed from the constant dragging on the ground. With a lot of love, patience and care, New Mark’s condition improved within a few weeks. Unfortunately, no one can give him back healthy hind legs. Nevertheless, New Mark is grateful to all helping hands and is working in an exemplary manner on his recovery. He is also a real cuddly dog.

New Mark, the survivor

New Mark gains confidence and feels the love of the keepers. He is curious, friendly and always very hungry. The improvised wheelchair, which is a great help to him in getting around, was quickly accepted by the survival artist. The important thing for him is that he can go for walks in this way and meet other people and animals. The carers are also trying to teach him that he now has to wear nappy pants so that faeces and urine can be collected.

Changing nappies and cleaning up are no problem for this loyal companion and he takes things patiently. The medical treatments are also not a negative experience for New Mark, he has confidence and knows that disinfectants, ointments and bandages are simply necessary to allow the wounds to heal.

So much for New Mark’s back story. We have gained the impression that he has accepted his fate. New Mark’s eyes look more confident and happier and his silky red and gold coat is shiny again. When New Mark sits, no one would guess that his hind legs are affected.

“As long as we have to protect animals from humans, we have achieved nothing. Only when we no longer have to protect animals will we have reached our goal. Then we will have changed something: US”. – Michael Aufhauser

Update:

Our New Mark has found a home

Being different is quite normal at Gut Aiderbichl. Even for Eva, who has given New Mark a new home, his physical impairment is no reason not to take him into her heart 🥰
