When we gave our calf Toni the go-ahead in February 2015, we were delighted to be able to give him a new home. But at the same time, it made us sad. This is because many male calves from breeds such as Jersey cattle do not find buyers in Austria. They are much more difficult to fatten than Fleckvieh cattle, for example. Tens of thousands of calves are exported abroad in this way every year and are often on the road for up to 90 hours when they finally arrive at their destination - truly a fall from grace of the 21st century!
